Oh Christmas Tree

Christmas is one of my favorite time of year. It’s also the prettiest time of the year. I love all the twinkling lights and the sparkling ornaments on the Christmas tree!  How can you not love all the lights, ornaments, and Christmas tree?! I’m one of those people who is really eager to start decorating my house once December rolls around the corner, but not everyone is like me.

One year, I was at my good friend’s house during the holidays and noticed that she didn’t have any Christmas decorations up. I asked her where were her Christmas decorations and she simply said it’s too much work to put them up. Now that her boys were grown up, she didn’t find motivation to  decorate any more. I asked her if she was going to host any Christmas party at her house and she said of course. What is a fun holiday party without any decorations!? So, I decided that I would help her put up her tree and make her house as festive as her party. Luckily, she had all the supplies in her garage. In a matter of a few hour, her house was decked out and ready for some holiday cheer.

This year, I discovered that more people are like my friend who dread putting up Christmas decorations because it’s more of a chore rather than joy. As a result, people avoid decorating their houses even though they have boxes of Christmas decorations sitting in their garage or storage. Christmas is only a week away and there is still time to prepare for the Christmas party at your house. Don’t worry, I’m here to help those who dislike decorating and want to get their house in shape for Christmas. Just follow the simple tips below.

Oh Christmas tree! Oh Christmas tree! How lovely are your branches.

Here are some easy steps to decorating a Christmas tree:

  1. Play Christmas music before you decorate. This will help set the mood to get you into the Christmas spirit.
  2. Bring in your Christmas decoration boxes inside your house from storage.
  3. Put up your Christmas tree with a tree skirt on the base.
  4. Test your Christmas light strands by plugging them into the outlet. Only put the working lights on your tree.
  5. Plug in the lights as you put Christmas lights on your tree. Make sure you have at least 2 strand of Christmas lights for your tree. You’re lucky if your artificial tree already comes with lights already installed on your tree.
  6. Decide what ornaments to go on the tree. Usually, most people have more ornaments than space on the tree especially with all the kids’ crafty ornaments from school. You don’t want to clutter the tree with all the ornaments and crafts. Pick the ones that are most special to your family and you.
  7. Put the ornaments scattered on your tree. Don’t put ornaments too close together. To save time and energy, don’t put ornaments on the parts of the tree that nobody is going to see or where the tree hits the wall.
  8. Put a star or angel on the top of your tree.

If you’d like to take decorating to the next level, here are some more tips to decorating your home with another focal point. This can be for the foyer or a table dedicated to your specific Christmas theme.

Tips for decorating a Christmas scene table:

  1. Choose one item as your focal point or the theme you want to highlight on your table. It can be a mini Christmas tree or a nativity scene.
  2. Choose smaller items to go along with your Christmas theme. Candles are an easy way to give a warm touch to your decorations. Don’t put too many items on your table to crowd your focal point.
The nativity scene is the highlight of this table.

I hope this was helpful to get you motivated for decorating your house! Merry Christmas!

  1. Hey Angie
Thank you for sharing about one of your favorite holidays. When I was younger, there was this lane in my hometown that would be lit up called Thompson Street. There would be a Christmas tree and the whole street would be lit up. That is one of my traditions, walking down the brightly lit street. Thank you for sharing what you like to do during Christmas.

    1. Thanks for sharing your traditions. I love looking at Christmas lights on houses. When I was young, my sister and I put up lights on our house to make it fun and festive. I remember one year, we climbed up a ladder to put up lights on our gutter. It didn’t last very long before something got caught and pulled the whole strand down. From that point on, we only decorated the front yard.
